I was discussing this with my partner the other day and I kept asking, why did Kate say "they've taken her" As I was talking to him I recalled something happening when I used the same term as opposed to someone. I read something in another forum that I think has answered the question for me.

Someone was talking about their mother's house being broken into and she said that her mother told her that "they took everything". This was despite not knowing who broke into the house, or how many. This woman comes from the north of the country and she said that it is a term often used. I come from Liverpool and this is something that we say. Kate came from Liverpool so its not hard to imagine her saying what she said.
